Hi Andrew,

sorry, but I didn't noticed your answer and I never received a feedback by email. As far as I remember it was the second part of the second snippet, but actually I'm not able to see any issue.
Maybe you changed the snippet meanwhile?

Andrew - it's not a bad thing for the category either. That meerkat is now synonymous to the home insurance market. It's interesting to see that the initial rise in the sector occured for both search terms at the same time.

It really can't be a bad thing for the whole sector that People are winning big fluffy Meerkats in smoking jackets on Brighton pier. It's interesting to see a relatively boring industry being given life with such a campaign. Next stop Double Glazing.

George,

China is opening up its market gradually, allowing its citizens to experience external stimulus in such a way as not to create a cultural revolution rather a cultural evolution.

China does not want a world dominated by the West, particularly the USA. Their desire is to create balance in world politics.

What Google does next is down to politics and their business strategy.

What is your view?

Localised search in China will bring on a whole new dimension to search. China and India will one day have more internet users than the rest of the world combined - this will not only have an affect on search but the way we all interact on the internet on a daily basis

The redirect is a "302" so not permanent is the technical sense. But more to the point. Who really knows? I think Google's business vision resides in the development of Chrome. Chrome not being a browser as such but more an operating system. Chrome's goal (I am guessing) is to become a vehicle and enabler for remote / cloud computing. You could envisage an internet landscape for consumers as it is for many businesses today where applications and data is held in secure remote data-storage-centers. A user will simply through various devises connect to those applications and data through the internet.

So,

If China cannot guarantee data privacy and or the firewall is stripping out content entering China from abroad then this model for Google will never work in China.

Their solution to throw all the toys out of the pram smacks of a juvenile company. Hong Kong is still China but interestingly outside the Great Firewall. Hummm

Andrew,
Never underestimate the power of the brand experience. Building brand equity in this way helps support the buying decision process offline as well as online. Doing the ROI modeling on SEO and brand equity is certainly a harder game and would in most cases lead to "over analysis paralysis".

What is your take on Google's decision to temporarily redirect www.google.cn to www.google.com.hk due to privacy invasion? Could this only be a temporary considering the type of redirect they are using or do you envision that this is Google cutting all ties with China after the email fiasco?

Thank you.

I guess the question is how much value do searches for "compare the meerkat" have compared to "home insurance". How many people who search "compare the meerkat" are just wanting to watch the meerkat video rather than compare insurance products. Maybe I'm missing the point though - if people are actively seeking out the advert video this can't be a bad thing for the brand.

Look at the botom part of the Google search (Advanced) page:-

Date, usage rights, numeric range, and more

Expand this and you can select the U.K. filter.

It's well hidden; I had the samec problem and happened across the solution.

I'm amazed with the internet usage statistics for the UK. We are told all the time that UK broadband etc is well behind europe. - When infact it is leading the way.

However what is interesting about that graph is how far ahead the US was in the 90s - it would be good to see this data aligned with GDP.
