Onlive set to change the way we play our games, but will it work?

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Onlive claims to have sorted out the gaming sector and offer us “Powerful Gaming made easy”. The idea behind Onlive is that you never have to purchase another computer console to play the latest games again – music to the ears of every parent in the western world no doubt. Instead you use either an ‘entry level’ PC or MAC; or use the OnLive MicroConsole connected to your TV to play your games. These devices will connect via broadband to the Onlive cloud of gaming servers and the output is sent directly to your screen. (more…)

Lost Finale – Forum Internet Searches On Google

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Firstly, let me point out that I am not a Lost fan, I am still yet to sit through an entire episode and as a result was left bewildered this morning at the fact my colleague felt compelled to wake up at the crack of dawn on 24th May (on a Monday of all days) to watch the globally aired last ever episode at 5am – Then sit on a Lost Forum for another few hours.

After partaking in some universal questioning of his sanity, one thing has become clearer as the day has progressed… (more…)

Global Internet Usage 2010 facts and stats

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

globeFor almost ten years most people in business in the major cities in the UK, US, Japan and Western Europe have enjoyed speedy broadband connection with the capacity to share and view large amounts of data. Businesses have prospered, old industries have diversified and whole new sectors (like SEO) have appeared.

However that isn’t the case for the majority of the World’s population. Vast sections of the planet don’t have access to the internet.

But things are changing, and when the large populations of China, India, Russia and Brazil enjoy a higher penetration of internet usage a new world order could be upon us. (more…)

Google UK SERPs update from Matt Cutts

Friday, April 30th, 2010

google-logoHaving been blessed by scorching sunshine over the past week in Lanzarote, I returned home last night to find that Matt Cutts had delivered yet another Google Webmaster entry that discusses the state of Google’s UK SERPs. Back in June 2009 there was a major shake up in the Google UK that saw the inclusion of non relevant foreign websites that were ranking ahead of UK specific website. The timing of the video could not have been any better, considering only last week I noticed a number of strange results in the Movies sector..

Who’s winning the 2010 election on Google?

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

As the election draws nearer I thought it would be nice to see who is being searched the most in Google – and which political leader and political party is earning the most searches on the internet as the election campaign goes on. Searches obviously don’t mean votes (thank goodness, see first chart), but it shows the impression a person has had on the public – negatively and positively. (more…)

Bing slow at updating whilst Google enters new speed realm

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Screen shot 2010-03-02 at 14.11.11

Back in May 2009 Bing’s Webmaster Spokesman told us that:

“We are busy adding upgraded and updated technologies to provide better search results. That’s good news for you!” (more…)

Isn’t Google supposed to adhere to the canonical tag?

Friday, January 15th, 2010

google-logoLast month Google announced they would be supporting the canonical tag across cross domain platforms. The canonical tag has been supported since February for both internal URLs and subdomains. However, today I noticed that Google was returning a subdomain and a root domain with the same content, even though the subdomain has a canonical tag pointing to the content on the main domain.

Google now supports cross domain canonical tag

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

google-logoBack in February 2009 – Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft all announced that their search engine platforms would support a new type of tag that would inform search engine spiders of the ‘canonical’ page when there are several available. This tag could be used only internally or on a subdomain of that URL. Last week Google announced on their blog that the tag is supported across multiple domains. This will help webmasters who (for whatever reason) do not have server side control over their websites, whilst allowing the source domain to take precedent over any duplicate URLs.

PDF Ranking test results

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Last 26th of October I started a test to monitor how PDF documents are crawled and indexed by search engines.

The aim of the test was to try and find out the following things about PDF documents like:

  • Do Microsoft Word® headers (normally used into a professional document) make a difference?
  • How much does the Keyword Density in the document impact on its ranking?
  • How much do the document properties (Title, Author, Comments and Keywords) influence the indexing?

So Bing UK is out of BETA huh?

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Picture 4So Bing thought they’d jump on the ‘our results don’t contain non UK specific websites’, which is in relation to Google’s decision to weaken the Geo-filter in mid June.  This decision resulted in the SERPs being flooded by non-UK specific websites – and had Matt Cutts running to the hills after being chased by angry webmasters.  But we can always rely on Bing to produce relevant results to a UK audience for universal search terms right?…..Right?!!!

Google UK SERPs changes are here to stay

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

I awoke this morning to a beautiful sunny day over here in the UK, picked up my iphone to check my tweets and found that Matt Cutts had completed a YouTube video regarding the changes made within Google UK since the start of June. I was indeed shocked and amazed that he even considered answering a question that had a number of SEO professionals suggesting that the SERPs were broken. The general conclusion to Matt’s video was that ‘yes there are more .com websites ranking within Google UK’ and ‘its all about relevancy of the search query’. I think Matt has chosen to side step the real issue at hand and question that was being asked by Guavarian – the inclusion of relevant .com websites isn’t a problem – the problem is that the searcher’s experience is being diminished due to the inclusion of non-UK focused websites.

Bored of Twitter? Twitter is boring say users

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

picture-9We were told Twitter was the biggest thing since the printing press. We questioned “what’s the point of Twitter” but now with some research we hear that people can’t really be bothered with it. Stop Press, is it true, Twitter is pointless, Twitter is useless, Twitter is boring? Is this the end of Twitter? Well maybe, maybe not. (more…)

Google is out to get us? oh please

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Google has apparently been inundated with complaints about invasion of privacy with its new Google Street View, one Village, Broughton even banned the car from driving through, so why are people behaving like a mixture of Luddites and the League of Gentlemen? (more…)

Too much scaremongering online

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

We all know that there are some nasty people out there as well as some seriously stupid people, but in a week when the Google Street Car was turned away from a village, are we getting taken for a ride by lazy online media outlets, newspapers and anti-virus developers. (more…)

Marks and Spencers online sales boost

Why use Twitter? What is the point of Twitter? Twitter Usage? Answers here!

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

TwitterOther than claiming to know all the words to Mama Mia in a macho, football loving office environment – there isn’t much more embarrassing than admitting to loving the massive new craze – Twitter. I continue to smash the insults for six as I soldier on with my Twitter quest. I want the world to know what I am doing! I want the world to be aware of the ups and downs of my life! Is this the sole reason people use Twitter? Is this the point of twitter? How can we define Twitter usage? All is below my friend.
