Isn’t Google supposed to adhere to the canonical tag?

January 15th, 2010

google-logoLast month Google announced they would be supporting the canonical tag across cross domain platforms. The canonical tag has been supported since February for both internal URLs and subdomains. However, today I noticed that Google was returning a subdomain and a root domain with the same content, even though the subdomain has a canonical tag pointing to the content on the main domain.

Google now supports cross domain canonical tag

December 22nd, 2009

google-logoBack in February 2009 – Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft all announced that their search engine platforms would support a new type of tag that would inform search engine spiders of the ‘canonical’ page when there are several available. This tag could be used only internally or on a subdomain of that URL. Last week Google announced on their blog that the tag is supported across multiple domains. This will help webmasters who (for whatever reason) do not have server side control over their websites, whilst allowing the source domain to take precedent over any duplicate URLs.

PDF Ranking test results

November 26th, 2009

Last 26th of October I started a test to monitor how PDF documents are crawled and indexed by search engines.

The aim of the test was to try and find out the following things about PDF documents like:

  • Do Microsoft Word® headers (normally used into a professional document) make a difference?
  • How much does the Keyword Density in the document impact on its ranking?
  • How much do the document properties (Title, Author, Comments and Keywords) influence the indexing?

Google Adds Breadcrumbs to SERPS – aka ‘Site Hierarchies’

November 23rd, 2009

google-logoRecently, I’ve been noticing breadcrumb-style link trails appearing within the SERPs for many queries on Google. Apparently these are called “site hierarchies” and Google think they’ll help people more easily find what they’re looking for in situations where the destination page is too specific.

So Bing UK is out of BETA huh?

November 17th, 2009

Picture 4So Bing thought they’d jump on the ‘our results don’t contain non UK specific websites’, which is in relation to Google’s decision to weaken the Geo-filter in mid June.  This decision resulted in the SERPs being flooded by non-UK specific websites – and had Matt Cutts running to the hills after being chased by angry webmasters.  But we can always rely on Bing to produce relevant results to a UK audience for universal search terms right?…..Right?!!!

How Google (and other SEs) crawl and ranks PDF files

October 28th, 2009

There is one common thing that link web 2.0 users: the necessity to take part of this new fantastic world contributing to it, inserting web pages, picture, documents, comments and so on. So it’s not rare to see emerging web sites containing tons of new material rather than a forum at the top of the SERPs. And it’s not rare to see different type of documents rather than a standard web page. Documents like a Word file, Power point presentation, PDF etc. Read the rest of this entry »

Google dabbles with real time search

September 15th, 2009

The phenomenon of Twitter in 2009 has really opened the debate on whether real time search should, or could, be introduced within Google – or any other search engine for that matter. By modifying the query – the user is allowed to specify a set of parameters – which produces more specific results. Looking for a specific time frame result set has probably been one of the most ambitious tasks that Google user ever attempted. This blog post looks at comparing Google’s real time search results against Twitter.

X-Robots-Tag: Control Google Indexing via HTTP Headers

August 27th, 2009

We’ve all got used to being able to control how the major search engines index our sites using a combination of robots.txt and the robots meta tag to add attributes like ‘noindex’ to individual pages. While this works great for the pages themselves, it’s not so good for non-HTML, indexable content such as PDFs or embedded media, as we have no HTML <meta> tag in which to insert the meta-information. In this article we take a look at a potential solution to this problem: the X-Robots-Tag HTTP Header.

Google UK SERPs changes are here to stay

August 19th, 2009

I awoke this morning to a beautiful sunny day over here in the UK, picked up my iphone to check my tweets and found that Matt Cutts had completed a YouTube video regarding the changes made within Google UK since the start of June. I was indeed shocked and amazed that he even considered answering a question that had a number of SEO professionals suggesting that the SERPs were broken. The general conclusion to Matt’s video was that ‘yes there are more .com websites ranking within Google UK’ and ‘its all about relevancy of the search query’. I think Matt has chosen to side step the real issue at hand and question that was being asked by Guavarian – the inclusion of relevant .com websites isn’t a problem – the problem is that the searcher’s experience is being diminished due to the inclusion of non-UK focused websites.
